Who uses it
Mainly large companies, plus some universities and charities, most of them outside the UK on Coupa's own published customer stories.
What the Coupa Supplier Portal is
Coupa sells spend management software to large organisations, which use it to raise purchase orders, receive invoices, pay suppliers and run sourcing events such as requests for quotation and auctions. The Coupa Supplier Portal is the free website where suppliers deal with those customers: seeing orders, sending invoices, tracking payments and keeping company details up to date.
It is mainly a tool for working with customers who already buy from you or invite you to quote. Coupa has been owned by the investment firm Thoma Bravo since February 2023.
Joining, with or without an invitation
Most suppliers join from a customer's invitation email, which links your account to that customer straight away; invitation links expire after 30 days. You can also create an account yourself at supplier.coupahost.com and then ask each customer to connect to it.
Your account is tied to an email address, so register with the one your customer already holds for you or they will not find you. Then complete your business profile and payment details, and add colleagues so the account is not held by one person.
Sourcing events: invited and public
If a Coupa customer invites you to a sourcing event, you can usually respond straight from the link in the email, even without a portal account; some buyers add a one-time passcode.
Inside the portal, the Sourcing tab also lists public sourcing events from Coupa customers that have chosen to open them, and you can ask to take part. It is worth a look now and then, but most UK public sector tenders are advertised elsewhere, such as Find a Tender.
What is free and what costs money
The portal itself is free: profile, orders, invoices, catalogues, payments, sourcing events and live chat support. Coupa also sells optional extras, including a Verified badge with higher search ranking and paid premium support.
None of these is needed to trade with your customers or respond to events, and Coupa itself says being Verified does not guarantee you will be selected or win work.
